Too Sweet for Rock n' Roll: DiabloJo's Handmade Rockabilly Accessories!

Why hello again, Rockers & Sailorettes!
It's been a week since my much loved first Too Sweet For Rock n' Roll feature, spotlighting Little Miss Delicious, and so on today's Too Sweet for Rock n' Roll I'll be spotlighting another very special crafts & businesswoman and her online shop, in a different niche of the style. Her works range from the cutest homeware to the most glamorous fascinators! Curious? Read on!

What does owning, managing and representing your own handmade accessories business consist of?

Running your own business from home can be extremely hectic! It’s nice to be in my own surroundings, working away to music, but I never have a start and finish time. I can start sewing in the morning at around 9am and not be done until 9/10 at night some times (and that includes weekends!)
But there is nothing more satisfying than being acknowledged and appreciated for what you do and make. A simple compliment from somebody can make all the hard work worthwhile!

How do you feel about the handicrafts business today, regarding the growth of the internet?

The increasing popularity for handmade unique goods can only be positive for me. But as well as the demand from customers growing, I feel there are a lot more creative people trying to go it alone than ever before, which is why it’s important to make your products unique and stand out from the crowd. Coming up with original ideas is half the battle.

Name your top five aesthetic influences/idols and tell us why.

I don’t really go in for the whole ‘idols’ thing. But here are some artists that have been an inspiration in one way or another.

Her artwork is beautiful, her tattooing is amazing and her style is so unique. Fabulous!

Immodesty Blaize was for me the introduction to the world of Burlesque (I was a late starter!) and although I’m not a Burlesque dancer myself (I would LOVE to be!) I love the whole glamour and tease of the art, which is why I started making the fascinators. If I can’t be in it directly, maybe my bespoke pieces can!

3. Juliette Lewis
Although Juliette doesn’t influence me directly, I love her nonchalant blasé ‘couldn’t give a F**k’ attitude. Infact, she’s the complete opposite to me! I worry about every little thing and can lie awake for hours thinking of work related troubles! I need a leaf outta Juliette’s Book!!

4.  Sailor Jerry I suppose I would have to go back to Sailor Jerry and his iconic tattoo flashes for a lot of my influence. I love old school tattoo designs and feature them heavily throughout my work.

5. Rockabilly Without my cultural interest in the Rockabilly and Kustom Kulture scene I don’t think my business would be what it is today. Every item I make is a little bit of something I love, tattoos, rock n roll, Mexican art, Tiki, etc. It makes working so much more fun when you’re involving your passions.

Please share a picture of your daily glamour/everyday wear and describe it.
I would say around 80% of my wardrobe is nautical based. Anything with anchors or stripes is a definate for me! I wear a headscarf most days, just because I love to. But usually I am very unglamorous and work in my jeans, a ripped t-shirt and slippers!!!

What do you fancy the most about being Miss DiabloJo?

Haha well, I love the fact that people now call me Diablo Jo! This can only mean my name is getting out there and recognised. I love meeting so many lovely new people either at fairs or events or through my business online and I just enjoy doing something that makes me happy every day!

Do you have a wisdom cupcake for the Sailors and Sailorettes reading?

In the words of Elvis Presley, “Ambition is a dream with a V8 engine”. If you want to make something come to life, you’ve got to work hard at it. But hopefully in the end it’s worth it!

Some of my favourite examples of the items available in the shop:
Hold Fast Nautical Anchor Air Freshener £5

Scroll Love Hate Heart Hair Clips and Ace Card Hair Clips £7/pair

Purple Skull Hair Flower £5,99 and Tropical Green Orchid Hair Flower  £6

And last but not least, my obvious favourite...
Large Nautical Fascinator £35
