Hey Good Looking: Kandy K Alternative Model

Hello, Sirens & Pirates!
I hope you're all making the most of your summer and enjoying your sunny spells. As I had previously mentioned, I fell ill upon my arrival in South Portugal but I've recovered almost fully which means more writing, and faster publishing. I didn't know if I'd be so lucky as to getting a reply but I took the chance of emailing Miss KandyK, make-up artist, accessory designer and alternative model, to ask her a few questions for the old blog and she was kind enough to reply. I bet you've heard of her before, or seen her on websites such as her own Gypsy Gold Etsy Shop, Clutterfly Jewellery and Kitsch Kaos, amongst others, but whether you have or you haven't I'm quite sure you'll be dying to know what she has to say! So read on, if you dare...

You have been modelling for both big and smaller alternative companies in the last few years, but that's not your only job. How did your fashion and modelling facett come about?
I started out as a makeup artist, i went to school and started networking and meeting photographers, i ended up being asked to model by a few photographers and it all blew up from there. I honestly love doing both, and styling shoots too. As long as there's a camera, some pretty ladies and talented, creative people involved, i'm all about it.

What does working as an alternative model consist on?
It's lots of fun, but takes time and effort too. I'm usually emailing back and forth with designers, photographers and publications. I do this all myself as i honestly don't believe there are any agencies that represent models like me. Plus i like to be in control. I'm constantly looking for inspiration, cool places to shoot and new designers to work with. It's a dream job, i get to play dress up all the time and meet some of the most amazing people. There's a few bad apples amongst the bunch but they don't tend to stick around long. You have to enjoy it, that's the main thing and not take yourself too seriously!

How do you feel about the alternative fashion market today, with all the new styles and variants besides the sudden overload of model aspirants?
I think it's great that there is a lot of choice now, i love websites like, where you can buy from independent designers, get custom items made that won't break the bank. I also find a lot of new designers on
Facebook. And i love that more girls are getting involved in modeling, if it's fun and gives a girl some confidence then it's a great thing.

Name your top five aestethic influences/idols and tell us why.

Gwen Stefani
Because she's beautiful, has amazing style, so very talented and an inspirational business woman

Vivienne Westwood

I used to work for her, her style is amazing and she's growing old gracefully

Janice Dickinson

She's just amazing to me, i love her 'don't give a f*ck' attitude, she's stunning, a great business woman and i like that she doesn't hide her plastic surgery.

Sabina Kelley
I get compared to her a lot and think it's a huge compliment. She's top of her game when it comes to alt pinup modeling, she has a beautiful family and always looks amazing, i've never seen a bad
picture of her, ever!

Kat Von D
A lot of people hate on her, but i think she's done so much great work to get the tattoo community more accepted. She has great style, i love her makeup, and she is a talented photographer too.

Please share a picture of your daily glamour/everyday wear and describe it!
I usually don't wear a lot of makeup in the day, i have a toddler and he doesn't mind if mummy looks a bit tired! I usually just wear black liquid liner and pencil in my eyebrows. Sometimes i'll throw on some red lipstick and sunglasses if we head out someplace quick. Red lipstick is my current addiction.

What do you fancy the most about being Miss Kandy K?
I love that i inspire people, that might seem a big headed thing to say cause all i do is take pretty pictures. But i often get sweet messages from girls with tattoos and and they say i've helped them feel accepted and show that girls like us, that are a little different and out there, can make a name for themselves in this industry. But really i just love that i can be creative and share it with the world, cause that's what makes my heart beat.

Do you have a wisdom cupcake for the Sailors and Sailorettes reading?
If you're into modeling, just stay true to yourself, set boundaries and stick to them, no matter how pushy a photographer may be or how much you want to be 'famous'. At the end of the day, pictures are online forever, you want to enjoy what you do and most of all, make your family proud.

And now, the awaited selection of a few favourite modelling pictures, enjoy!
Isn't she a modern times pinup? She also blogs about her life and posts regular updates on shoots and events on her website so don't forget to keep on your bookmarks to know what this alternative starlette is up to.

As for me, I have big news for you and all will be revealed very soon... I'll just say it's a Vintage feature of another sort, and that I'm giving you all the chance of sporting the blog's colours around..!
