Too Sweet for Rock n' Roll: Boo's Bows

Hello again, guys and dolls!
I always have so much fun putting together Too Sweet for Rock n' Roll features and this was no exception. Boo's Bows was a lucky find when I started the blog, and she only had a month's advantage to me which didn't stop her from acheiving great success with her handmade creations for girls. Working all by herself, she puts together oldschool tattoo symbols and cute influences and it seems to be a killer combination from her success to date!  The fact that she takes so much effort in customer service and provides custom work for accessible prices is a plus too... So if you'd enjoy reading more about the lady behind this example of a small successful handmade online business, just carry on!

You created Boo's Bows as a handmade accessories line, a concept and an online business. Would you please share a bit about its birth and growth?
Well I set up Boo's Bows in April 2010 as I had been struggling to find work after the birth of my second child, the lovely little miss Boo. In the current economic climate there seemed to be no place for a mother of two small children and I could not find a job with hours to suit so I thought why not just be my own boss?!
I have always customised my clothing and accessories along with making them from scratch and had a definite idea of exactly what I wanted to make so I dived in head first, bought a load of supplies and set up a Facebook page dedicated to my creations and it just went from there really. I have only been up and running for 17 weeks but what an amazing 17 weeks it has been, business is really booming and I now have a 2-3 week waiting list for my accessories and jewellery.

What does owning, managing and representing your own handmade jewellery business consist on?
Well it takes a lot of time and hard work but I wouldn't have it any other way.
My day is spent checking emails/Facebook messages for sales and custom orders, creating and designing my accessories and chatting to customers.
I love that I am providing people with original pieces and making them happy. There is no better feeling than when a customer receives their accessories and tells the world how happy they are.

How do you feel about the handicrafts business today, regarding the growth of the internet?
I think the internet has provided a fantastic place for people to really stand on their own two feet and make something of themselves. It allows people access to suppliers and wholesalers not to mention a world of inspiration too. The handicrafts business is certainly growing more and more popular by the minute and I think that is just amazing. There is a huge market for unique handmade items and I feel blessed to be a part of that.

Name your top five aestethic influences/idols and tell us why.

Of course Bettie Page has to be at the top. She epitomised beauty and femininity and just screamed sex appeal. What a babe!

Collectif clothing are awesome. If I could, I would buy every last thing on their website it is all just beautful and I just can't get enough of their wonderful clothing.

My next choice has to be Ava Gardner. What a stunning woman! There was something about her that hinted towards a naughty side but you were just floored by her natural beauty at first glance.

I adore Iron Fist Clothing. The bright colours, unique designs and personality of each item means that it is a must in my wardrobe and the shoes are to die for.

My main influence has to be tattoos. A lot of the imagery on my pieces is inspired by tattoo art, minly old school traditional. The whole reason I started Boo's Bows was to provide my customers with unique tattoo influenced designs as I would often spend days on end searching for accessories with such a theme and come up with nothing so I saw that there was a gap in the market. Once I decided to create my range of babies/childrens accessories I felt that I had filled that gap as they are proving to be very popular especially the nautical/tattoo themed pieces.

Show as a picture of your daily glamour and describe it!

I would never be seen dead without my eyebrows drawn on and hair is always a big thing for me too, I usually have it pinned up with a head scarf or down with extensions in. I mainly wear dresses and cardis but am not ashamed to say that when I am at home working I am most likely to be found in a pair of comfy pj's and slippers or slouchy jeans. I don't really have a set style I just try to dress for my shape and accentuate what I have got. Of course being a girly girl I have a very large shoe collection, most of them never even worn but I think it's a girls prorogative to have a lot of shoes. The more the better I say.

What do you fancy the most about being MissBoo's Bows?
I just love making people happy with the little ideas that pop into my head. This job is highly rewarding on so many levels and the satisfaction I get from providing my services as a crafter is on par with the satisfaction I get from being a mother to my children. I would never turn back now. Boo's Bows is here to stay and growing by the day and I can't get enough of it.

Do you have a wisdom cupcake for the Sailors and Sailorettes reading?
For all the crafters out there, keep doing what you are doing because it is such a fulfilling trade to get into and I for one would love to see fresh new ideas... well I am a girl and I do love to shop!
I once heard this quote and believe that in it's utmost that it is true:
"Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society." Mark Twain

As usual, a selection of my favourite creations follows. What do you think?
If you've fallen in love with that one piece, or would like a custom treat along the lines of what you've just seen, you can find and contact Boo's Bows on Facebook... Be sure to add her as a friend, she holds a monthly competition to give away pretties like these to lucky fans!
