Today I'll finally lift the veil about the adorable and unusual vintage shop I found in Bairro Alto, Lisbon when I last visited Miss AP's store - she went to pick up a Fred Perry bag in her break and I couldn't help but share this little new treasure with all of you. Walking in, you're taken over by the retro decoration with twist, and the eclectic mix of retro and vintage items that fill the shelves, highlighting 60s classic mod trends and streetstyle for boys and girls alike. I then talked to Jean Pierre, one of the owners, who was so sweet to later sit down and answer my questions with his partner Patricia. Here is a peek at Blow Up Vintage, hope you enjoy it as much as I have!
You founded Blow Up Vintage as a concept and a vintage shop. Would you please share a bit about its birth and growth?
Both Patricia and I (Jean Pierre) have travelled extensively and have always loved urban culture aesthetic and clothing. Patricia is an Architect and I am a Photographer. It is hard not to notice that which surrounds us. When ever I travelled outside Lisbon I would bring back a bag or a funky pair of shoes that would be of great interest to friends. we simply started ordering those items and selling them as per what we considered to be an accessible, realistic price. At some point we simply decided that we should open a shop and bring Urban Vintage to Lisbon. although I am not certain that we are unique, we certainly hope to make vintage urban fashion accessible.
What does owning, managing and representing your own vintage shop & business consist on?
It consists of many hours of searching and annoying friends abroad so that me may always have the best and most accessible hand picked urban vintage clothing and accessories around!
How do you feel about the vintage market today, regarding the growth of the Internet?
One can only hope that it continues growing so that we may have more options. Sadly shipping costs are prohibitive so even if one gets a good deal for one or another item, shipping costs tend to ruin what could be a sweet deal. Still, if one has a very specific item in mind, the Internet is probably the only place one may find it.
Name your top five aesthetic influences/idols and tell us why.
1) David Hemmings in Blow up ( UK Mod)
2) Jean Paul Belmondo / Jane Seberg : Á Bout de Soufle (French New Wave)
3) Edie Sedgwick (New York 60's)
4) Jimmy Cooper in Quadrophenia (UK Mod)
5) Toss up between Jane Birkin / Brigite Bardot / Serge Gainsbourgh (French Retro / 60´s)
Please share a picture of your daily glamour/everyday wear and describe it!
Not much to describe... Patricia likes a sort of toned down Betty Page / baby doll look on occasion while I usually wear vintage sneakers and mix them up with an updated Mod look.
