Hello, guys and dolls!
Speaking of news and novelties, here is the most recent retro online shop to make heads turn and journalists and bloggers' ink run; Stop Traffic Clothing. Rebecca kindly wrote me a few lines on the brand, but you couldn't imagine my surprise looking through the website; her UK based shop is not only the first shop I've found stocking a full Bettie Paige Clothing collection as they also sell Vintage Allure, MissFortune Clothing and accessories such as Helen Rochfort bags, Kiss My Cherry Hats, Anna Lou of London jewellery and Jonathan Ashton hosiery - wow! Read on to know what Rebecca McWattie has to tell us about herself and the shop.
You created Stop Traffic Clothing as a vintage inspired concept and online business. Would you please share a bit about its birth and growth?
A glamorous friend of mine used to buy Bettie Page Clothing from the US and after I discovered what a pain importing was, with all the unknown customs charges I decided to open an online retro department store sourcing all the best 1940s and 1950s reproduction brands. We launched in November 2010 and have received such amazing feedback it’s been worth all the tears and stress of starting up.
What does owning, managing and representing your own retro clothing business consist of?
Everything! Making sure orders go out, meeting with suppliers and journalists, tweeting and writing the ‘Girl About Town’ blog http://stoptrafficclothing.blogspot.com - which keeps our customers and fans up to date with everything from vintage styling tips to the vintage events Stop Traffic Clothing attends.
How do you feel about the retro fashion scene today, regarding the growth of the internet and recent media attention?
I think retro and vintage is addictive - it’s not just about the clothes, it’s the parties and events you get to dress up for. Mad Men has meant lots of women now want to know where to find 1950s style clothing which is great for me! Stop Traffic appeals to women who want the look without having to wear something old.
Name your top five aesthetic influences/idols and tell us why.
Audrey Hepburn - everyone says that, but she’s was so fragile and feminine it’s impossible not to be inspired by her style. I loved her in Sabrina, she looked so young and innocent.
Ginger Rogers - she lived the Hollywood dream, she was beautiful, wore amazing clothes, sang, and got to dance with Fred Astaire.
Grace Kelly - for her confidence and beauty. Apparently she was an ugly duckling when she was young, if that’s true there’s hope for us all!
Marilyn Monroe - I like the pictures of Marilyn when she was just lounging about in her jeans - her inner beauty always seemed to shine out.
Elizabeth Taylor - in her 20s she was simply stunning with dark hair and violet eyes. In the 1950s people followed what she wore - she had more charisma than Cleopatra.
Please share a picture of your daily glamour/everyday wear and describe it!
This is the red dolly dress by Bettie Page Clothing which I wore to our launch party at 40 Winks Hotel. It’s a 1950s circle dress with built in petticoat and is one of our best sellers. I am holding the Lips handbag by Helen Rochfort - I like adding a fun element to an outfit.
What do you fancy the most about being Miss Stop Traffic Clothing?
It’s great talking about something you love doing, but you also get to wear amazing dresses every day - that’s really the best thing!
Do you have a wisdom cupcake for the Sailors and Sailorettes reading?
Don’t be afraid to try something new! People are more versatile than they think. In the words of Elizabeth Taylor ‘I feel very adventurous. There are so many doors to be opened, and I’m not afraid to look behind them.’
And after these lines, here are a few picks from their collection, what do you think?
(I have been fawning over this line of theirs for years... Who knows this time around?)
The fact that they stock such a wide array of styles assures there's a dress for every gal - and even though the prices aren't on the cheap, you always know you'll get the matching quality to the brand these come from. Don't forget you can get these and more pieces at the Online Shop, keep up with promotions and other updates on their blog, and become a fan on Facebook/follow on Twitter.
If you're in love too and want to get that one special piece, now... or a whole lot of them, just enter code HELLOSAILOR to get 10% OFF your order!
I must go as it's time to get my new ink... It's going to be a surprise, I'll publish it on here soon! Plus, I'm going to pick up a new piece from my favourite couture designers with my friend Inês from PerfectDrug, one of the prettiest pin up girls I know in Lisbon, tomorrow so there's a lot to tell you about. Keep 'em peeled for all these exciting updates!
