A summer’s end aloha to you all!
Being back in Lisbon, I am already academically occupied in creative writing classes, and have been around doing interesting things, one of them being DJing at Vogue’s Fashion Night Out at Storytailors Atelier Lisbon yesterday! I apologise, once more, for not being able to post more often but I’ll soon be settled in the city again and will go back to posting the fun and interesting content for all of you pin-ups and sailorettes! This time, I’m presenting you with what came of my talk with Natasha Bailie herself – yes, the awesome lady behind that fabulous shop that is www.natashabailie.com! I was looking forward to publish it so here it is, for your entertainment – enjoy!
You founded Natasha Bailie Vintage Clothing Co. as a concept, a vintage shop and an online business. Would you please share a bit about its birth and growth?
Natasha Bailie Vintage Clothing Company started on EBay. I sold mostly 1980s vintage tea dresses, shoes and handbags to begin with and I soon realised that I along with everyone else was offering the same thing. It was mediocre quality retro vintage stock. Selling eighties fashion just did not feel vintage enough for me. I felt like I was adding to the fast fashion problem and encouraging disposable clothing. I wanted to offer my customers something classic, glamorous and special. I have always been a huge fan of the fifties, so I started to source fabulous fifties vintage gowns from all over the world and that is when www.natashabailie.com was born. I now source and sell 1950s and 1960s cocktail dresses from all over and I sell worldwide too. The website is nearly three years old and has gone from strength to strength and has gathered quite a following of women who want something very special and exclusive.
What does owning, managing and representing your own vintage shop & business consist on?
Cupcakes and tea! I spend a lot of time sourcing, travelling around, styling, keeping the website stocked and blogging. It beats a 9-5 job.
How do you feel about the vintage market today, regarding the growth of the internet?
The vintage market is getting wider and wider everyday. When I first began there were a handful of us and of course there was Ebay and now everyone is doing it for themselves. I really encourage it and I love supporting my fellow vintage online sellers. Chances are if I cannot find an item for a customer another seller can. So we all help one another. It harks back to the “olden days” when people helped eachother out. There is a lovely online vintage community.
Name your top five aestethic influences/idols and tell us why.
Is my idol – I go on about her far too much, but she is the reason I fell in love with fifties vintage fashion and style. I grew up watching films like High Society and Rear Window…how could I not be inspired?
Of course I love the fashion, the era, the characters, the stories, the plots, the curves and DON DRAPER. I hope Mad Men teaches men to be handsome and women to be ladies again. No man should wear skinny jeans and there are some things a lady certainly should keep to herself!
I have been a huge Kylie fan since I was very little and I definitely sang the Locomotion into a hairbrush whilst swinging my hips. I have seen her perform several times and the woman amazes me. She is so glamorous and a complete fighter. Her success is inspiring.
Sex and the city (The series)
I can watch every episode over and over. I like the rest of the world fell head over Manolo heels for Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha. The characters and the fashion are legendary. I should add I am a HUGE fan of SATC, but could not be more disappointed in the movies! Why SJP? Why?
An obvious choice, but damn did that woman have a vision! The quilted Chanel handbag has never changed – it is a classic design, a piece of fashion history and on every girl’s wish list.
Please share a picture of your daily glamour/everyday wear.
What do you fancy the most about being Miss Natasha Bailie?
I love that I can sell a lifestyle through my vintage dresses and I can make a woman feel truly beautiful, just by finding her a perfect vintage dress. So simple yet so fabulous!
Do you have a wisdom cupcake for the Sailors and Sailorettes reading?
Keep reading this blogaroo for Mafalda is a doll!
Oh, isn’t she a cutiepie? And one with a quite eclectic taste too. Here you have a few of my favourite pieces now available on the website, click on the images to go to their pages.
And off I go again to do my homework (not even being sarcastic, how sad!) and prepare notes to give you a few more treats in the following days. Write you then!
